Abstract
In S lines from the recurrent selection programme with the local variety Ex-Borno and from varieties World Composite and Nigerian Composite studied in 1973-75 at two localities in Nigeria, the inbreeding depression for yield was between 17.8 and 36.0%. In experiments in 1975-76 using S1, S2, S3, S4 and S5 bulk populations of Nigerian Composite, grain yield and head weight and four other characters exhibited high and intermediate inbreeding depression respectively, but pollen shedding date increased with inbreeding. The relationship between mean performance and percentage of homozygosity was curvilinear, indicative of epistasis, for all the characters studied except 1000-grain weight, for which it was linear
