Abstract

In an irrigated field trials during 3 years, the effects of cutting frequency (3, 6 or 9 weeks) and high N rates (0, 950 or 2860 kg N/ha annually) on the growth of an established Kikuyu grass sward were studied. Herbage yield was increased largely by N and to a lesser extent by increasing the harvest interval. Significant yield increases were obtained between no N and 950 kg N but not between 950 kg N and 2860 kg N. Annual DM yields ranged from 8.9 t/ha (3 weeks, no N) to 25.2 t (9 weeks, 2860 kg N). With no applied N, cutting every 9 weeks increased yields over 3 and 6 weeks for most of the trial period, but there were no differences between cutting at 3 and 6 weeks. With N there were significant yield differences between all cutting frequencies during periods of active growth. Longer cutting intervals increased the mean sward growth rates during most of the growing season, but did not change the seasonal pattern of growth. N yield increased with N rate and as harvest interval increased. Yields varied from 239 kg N/ha (6 weeks, no N). to 932 kg N/ha annually (9 weeks, 2860 kg N). Herbage N content was reduced as harvest interval increased
