Abstract

The crop (including S. italica subsp. viridis, S. viridis var. major, S. italica subsp. italica races maxima and moharia) is reviewed with respect to its morphology and distribution, its cultivation in antiquity, its centres of domestication, and its importance as a crop. It is noted that fertile hybrids arise from crosses between many of the types
