Abstract
Populations of the "short form" ecotype of E. colonum from a calcareous soil at Malla, a moderately calcareous soil at Shiwalik and a noncalcareous soil at Chandigarh showed differential responses to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as to calcium. The decreased growth of the Malla population at high nitrogen and potassium levels was related to the low availability of these nutrients in calcareous soil. Similarly, the improved growth of the Chandigarh population at high levels of nitrogen and potassium could be related to the greater availability of these nutrients in noncalcareous soil. These studies indicate the existence of at least three subecotypes within the "short form" ecotype
