Abstract
This study was undertaken in major ragi (millet) growing tracts of Karnataka by interviewing a sample of 150 ragi growing farmers selected at random. The study points out that the high yielding ragi varieties in general performed well. The majority of the farmers were growing 'Purna', 'Shakti', H-22 and Indaf 1 and 3 varieties of ragi. Perceptions of the farmers growing these varieties, indicated many advantages of these varieties over the local varieties. The growers have also suggested some useful characteristics that could be incorporated into the varieties to be evolved in future to make them more useful. The reasons of the farmers who discontinued growing high yielding ragi varieties after cultivating them for some time implied that they lacked ability to judge these varieties. Among the varieties adopted by the farmers, 'Purna' was adopted by large numbers. Regarding adoption of selected recommended practices, the use of improved seeds and fertilizers was high while there was poor adoption of plant protection and recommended spacing
