Abstract

Analysis of data on seven growth and yield traits from a 16 X 16 diallel using method 2, model 1, and method 4, model 1, of Griffing [see PBA 27, 1034] revealed that estimates of both general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) were highly significant for all traits except ear diameter. High GCA : SCA ratios indicated a preponderance of additive genetic variance for most traits. The inbreds H26, H111, H310 and H440 showed the best combining ability for grain and ear traits. Better estimates of combining ability variances were obtained when data from the parental generation were excluded from the analysis than when they were included, whereas combining ability estimates were similar in both cases
