Abstract

In trials in 1971-4, 12 grasses were grown in mixture with 5 legumes. Pangola grass and Rhodes grass cv. Callide failed to establish and made no contribution to total sward DM yields which in 6 harvests ranged from 16.97 t/ha in a Pangola grass/legume mixture to 27.16 t/ha in a Brachiaria decumbens/legume mixture. Total grass yields ranged from 1.26 t in Cenchrus ciliaris cv. Biloela to 15.97 t/ha in B. decumbens cv. Basilisk. Stylosanthes guyanensis cv. Schofield was the only legume persisting after 3 years
