Abstract
Primary growth of S. sphacelata cv. Nandi I, Nandi II and Nandi III was cut at 3-wk intervals during 1973 and 1974. Dm yield, percentage DOM, percentage CP in the DM and some morphological characters were determined at each cut. When compared at a given date, digestibility of the 3 cv. did not differ significantly, but at the same growth stage the early-heading cv. had a higher digestibility than later-heading cv. The early cv. had a significantly higher DM production than the late cv. when the 2 yr were combined. During early stages of growth, stem digestibility was higher than leaf digestibility. DM yield and quality could be improved without affecting seed production by increasing leaf percentage at mature stages together with selection of early-heading plants
