Abstract

In nature, removal of pre-existing graminaceous and non-graminaceous associates resulted in enhanced establishment, greater population size and plant mass of E. colonum compared to where associated species were allowed to grow undisturbed. In general, pre-existing graminaceous species proved to be more severe competitors than non-graminaceous species. Establishment and growth of E. colonum was promoted in more moist soils though excess water was detrimental. Plants suffered greater mortality in a fertile soil though the ultimate plant mass was greater
