Abstract
Chromosome associations at metaphase I of meiosis were studied in F1 hybrids between Pennisetum americanum plants homozygous for translocations involving chromosomes 3 and 6 or 1 and 3 and plants in each of five inbred lines. For both translocation types, the centromere orientation types alternate 1, alternate 2, adjacent 1, adjacent 2 and indefinite were identified, the relative frequencies of certain types being influenced by the genetic background. In nearly all crosses, cells exhibiting the orientation types alternate 2 or adjacent 2 occurred at about the same frequency as cells exhibiting types alternate 1 or adjacent 1, indicating that homologous centromeres do not have a predominant role in the coorientation of the chromosome associations in this material. The nonhomologous coorientation types, alternate 2 and adjacent 2, were more subject to genetic regulation than the homologous coorientations
