Abstract
In the selfed progeny of a diploid plant of Pennisetum typhoides, which was a translocation heterozygote with chromosome number 2n = 13 + 2 telocentrics, one triploid plant was obtained. In the open pollinated progeny of this triploid, a mosaic plant was obtained with a chromosome number varying from 2n = 28 to 37 of which 23-33 were normal chromosomes and 3-7 were telocentrics. At PMC meiosis, associations of 5, 6, 7 or 8 normal chromosomes were observed. The plant was highly sterile. Of the five progeny that were obtained on selfing and open pollination of this plant, four showed chromosome numerical variation and one plant had a constant chromosome number of 2n = 26 + 4 telocentrics. Chromosome numerical variation is considered to be under the control of certain gene combinations and is not always associated with higher gene dosages and hence, higher polyploidy. The same factor that was responsible for the chromosome numerical variation appeared to be responsible for the development of the mosaic plant from the triploid
