Abstract

Commercial cultivation of hybrid bajra in GUjarat State commenced in 1966 and in 1970-71 it occupied an area of 0.55 million hectares. This constituted 26.5 per cent of the total area and 37.8 per cent oFtotal production of bajra in the State. Additional yields obtained due to hybrid bajra over the traditional varieties during the years 1968-69, 1969-70 and 1970-71 were 77.8, 70.1 and 69.2 per cent respectively. The percentage number of fields receiving nitrogenousfertilisers has rapidly increased in case of hybrid bajrafrom 23.1 per cent in 1967-68 to 44.1 per cent in 1970-71 and for other varieties from 7.8 to 18.2 per cent, respectively.
