Abstract

A survey of entomopathogenic organisms affecting Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) and Heliothis zea (Boddie) on sorghum was carried out in Georgia, USA, in 1979--80. A nuclear polyhedrosis virus was the most common pathogen observed in S. frugiperda attacking the crop at the whorl stage, resulting in 38% mortality in 1979 and 50% mortality in 1980. Other pathogens observed in the pest on sorghum whorls included a granulosis virus, Nomuraea rileyi, Entomophthora aulicae and a microsporidium. Infection by a nuclear polyhedrosis virus caused up to 80% mortality in larvae of H. zea collected from sorghum grain heads in September 1979, and N. rileyi and a granulosis virus were also present in these larvae. Larvae of S. frugiperda on sorghum heads were affected by both types of virus and by N. rileyi
