Abstract

Gymnosperms are very poorly represented in the modern Indian floras. In the vast Peninsular India their representation is almost negligible consisting of only a few species of Cycas, Gnetum and Podocarpus. It is only in the extra-peninsular Himalayas and to some extent in the connected ranges of Kashmir, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh < N.E. Frontier) that gymnosperms, essentially represented by conifers, enjoy a somewhat appreciable distribution, covering extensive tracts of forest land
