Abstract
In a pot trial, 8 hybrids of pearl millet were tested at soil pH 8.2 (control), 8.5, 9.0 or 9.5 corresponding to ESP values of 10, 20, 35 and 50, respectively. Germination and seedling survival were severely reduced in all hybrids at pH 9.5, but less so with hybrids 23D2A X D85, 126D2A X J1399 and 126D2A X J1270, which were considered tolerant. 1000-grain weight was unaffected up to pH 9, except for hybrids 23D2A X J2155, 23D2A X J934 and PHB19. Days to flowering were reduced by 3-4 days at pH 8.5 and by 6-7 days at pH 9.0 and 9.5. Based on expectations of a 50% reduction in yield, 126D2A X J1270 and 23D2A X D85 gave a maximum tolerance of pH 9.0 and PHB 19 and 23D2A X J2155 gave a minimum tolerance of pH 8.7. As relative tolerance and yield of hybrids at pH 9.0 appear to be closely related, yield performance at pH 9.0 could be used to screen for alkali tolerance
