Abstract

The rapidly growing population worldwide and the emerging economies in Asia, South America and Africa, coupled with urbanization and declining fossil fuel resources has lead to increased attention on alternative sources of energy, that are economically efficient and ecologically sustainable. Government of India has launched National Biofuels Policy in 2009 to encourage bioenergy production and utilization. The International Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has launched a global BioPower initiative in 2007 to find ways to empower the dryland poor to benefit from emerging opportunities in renewable energies. Sweet sorghum is a promising biofuel crop that complements other feedstocks for biofuel production. It is similar to the grain sorghum but possess sweet juice in the stalk tissues that can be fermented and distilled to produce ethanol. ICRISAT along with public and private partners is striving to enhance the productivity of this feedstock, popularize its cultivation and developing sustainable value chains addressing various issues in the chain in several developing countries, particularly in Asia and Africa for enhancing the livelihoods of the poor smallholder farmers in semi-arid tropics (SAT).
