Abstract
Laboratory and field studies were carried out in Kenya to determine the relationships between the development of sorghum plants and oviposition by Atherigona soccata Rond. Females laid more eggs on plants 4-8 cm high (in the field) or 12-16 cm high (in the laboratory) than on plants of any other size. Newly-hatched larvae survived only on plants 24 cm or less in height. The survival of first-instar larvae depended on the size of the plant, and was influenced by the resistance to penetration of the leaf sheaths and the distance between the infestation site, in the case of artificial infestation, and the growing point. Survival therefore depended on the ability of the female to select a suitably positioned leaf for oviposition
