Abstract

The incidence in Egypt of several fungal diseases of grain crops was found to depend very greatly upon the method of planting. The effect was analysed into a factor of depth of sowing and a factor of soil moisture. In irrigation countries where soil moisture and depth of sowing are both easily controllable, the results can be applied fully by sowing on the surface of soaked soil. In Egypt this "mud-sowing" (afir) method controls flag smut efficiently. The relative practical values of cultural methods, seed disinfection, and selection, are discussed.
