Abstract
Sorghum exhibits 2 types of resistance to Atherigona soccata Rond. One type is seedling resistance (primary resistance), which is indicated by differences in the number of seedlings attacked by the pest and the main mechanism of which is non-preference for oviposition, and the other is recovery resistance, which involves the ability of the injured plant to recover successfully from attack. Field studies were carried out in India to examine the genetic variability for both types of resistance in grain sorghum. Data were obtained on 8 characters for 4 resistant and 4 susceptible lines, their F1 hybrids, and their F2 progenies. Analysis of variance revealed adequate variation for all 8 characters in both the F1 and F2 generations. The heritability estimates were high for all the characters examined except yield/productive plant. The data indicated the possibility of accumulating favourable genes for recovery resistance with the help of suitable breeding techniques such as biparental mating. The preference for oviposition, seedling mortality and seedling height were traits related to primary resistance. The heritability estimates for these traits were high, but the estimates of genetic gain were low. The results indicated the need for high selection intensity in breeding for primary resistance to the pest
