Abstract
Alatae of Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) were trapped at Hays, Kansas, in 1974--79 in sites representative of the main crops and ground cover during the growing season. There were 2 distinct flight periods a year. The 1st had a peak in the 1st week of June, and the 2nd in the last week of July or 3rd week of August. Flght patterns indicated that early planting of both wheat and sorghum should be avoided. More aphids were trapped from the south-east than north-west in spring but not in summer. More aphids were collected from heights of 3--6 than from 1.5 m, but this might be attributed to the type of ground cover. As the green vegetation increased, the numbers of aphids collected decreased. However, strips of green wheat did not provide practical protection to adjacent bordering areas
