Abstract

A study was carried out in Haryana, India, to determine possible correlations between biochemical characteristics of sorghum plants and their susceptibility to attack by Atherigona soccata Rond. and Chilo partellus (Swinh.), using 6 moderately resistant lines and 3 susceptible ones. The contents of total sugars, tannin and total phenols in 30-day-old plants and of natural-detergent fibre, acid-detergent fibre, cellulose, lignin, tannin and total phenols in 50-day-old plants were negatively correlated with susceptibility to C. partellus, while positive correlations were observed between attack by this pest and phosphorus in 30-day-old plants and total sugars and silica in 50-day-old plants. No relationships were observed between insect attack and nitrogen and potassium contents. The susceptibility of sorghum to A. soccata was positively correlated with phosphorus and negatively correlated with the content of total phenols.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In tests of six moderately resistant and three susceptibility lines, the contents of total sugars, tannin and total phenols in 30-day-old plants and of neutral-detergent fibre and acid-detergent fibre, cellulose, lignin, tannin and total phenols in 50-day-old plants were negatively correlated with susceptibility to Chilo partellus, while positive correlations were detected between attack by this pest and P in 30-day-old plants and total sugars and silica in 50-day-old plants. The susceptibility of plants to Atherigona soccata was positively correlated with P and negatively correlated with content of total phenols
