Abstract

Comparison on the distribution of insoluble polysaccharides in the anther tissues of Sorghum vulgare Pers and paspalum crobiculatum Linn. is made employing periodic acid Schiff's (PAS) test, a histochemical method. In the early phases of anther growth, both the plants resemble in the distribution of starch grains in epidermis, connective and endothecium, appearance of mere PAS-positive tinge in the cytoplasm of sporogenous tissue and tapetum, and the deposition of additional PAS positive thickening in PMCs at the beginning of meiosis and its persistance until melosis completes...
