Abstract

Seeds, roots or leaves of rice, Echinochloa crus-galli, Amaranthus blitum [= A. lividus], Polygonum nodosum and Chenopodium album were exposed to 14C-benthiocarb, labelled in the benzyl methylene group. The herbicide was absorbed through the roots and the radioactivity translocated throughout the whole plant; the rates of absorption and translocation were different for the different species. Translocation occurred not only from roots into leaves but also from one leaf into other leaves and even, in some species, from leaves into roots. Absorption and translocation occurred more readily in E. crus-galli than in rice plants. Benthiocarb was rapidly absorbed by seeds and accumulated mostly in the embryo. Uptake of benthiocarb by plant organs was in the order mesocotyl (E. crus-galli only) > coleoptile > root > leaf. Benthiocarb was degraded rapidly in plants. From summary
