Abstract

Fourteen Panicum species and four interspecific hybrids were studied. The number of stomata per unit area ranged from 28.7 in leaves of P. pedicellatum to 85.6 in P. typhoides. No distinction could be made between species possessing different basic chromosome numbers with regard to frequency or size of stomata. There was a general trend towards increase in stomatal length as stomatal frequency decreased. Epidermal cell length was the greatest in P. pedicellatum. The shape of microhairs in all the species studied was of the Panicoid type. The occurrence of macrohairs was limited to P. pedicellatum, P. polystachyon and P. longistylis
