Abstract
From a diallel analysis involving 22 dwarf derivatives of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides (Burm.) Stapf and Hubb.) in the F1 and F3 generations, predominantly non-additive gene action was found for developmental traits such as chlorophyll content, tillering synchrony, leaf size, leaf senescence, and days to flower etc. This is indicative that genetic diversity is maintained for important components of fitness related to productivity and development. It was observed that the best combiners in F1 and F3 are the derivatives of IP-81 and two East African parents. It was also observed that the lines which were productive were synchoronous in tillering indicating the developmental stability of the populations, and that selection could be practised for the characters related to productivity and development. The introduction of dwarfing genes has, in no way, adversely affected the combining ability of the parents for yield as well as for developmental traits, which are equally important for a crop improvement programme
