Abstract
Morphological characters and chromosome numbers of plants from 250 seed collections of E. coracana, E. africana and E. indica grown in Illinois were determined. Cluster analysis was performed on data for 25 floral and seed characters and twelve vegetative characters in eleven Eleusine species. The results, together with distribution, linguistic and historic evidence, suggested the E. coracana originated in Africa rather than India and that E. coracana subsp. africana is the wild form
