Abstract
Germination of seeds from ninety species of vascular plants growing on Aldabra Atoll in the Western Indian Ocean was observed. The species showed a variety of germination strategies that included almost immediate germination of all seeds following planting and watering, staggered germination that continued for the 16 months for which the experiment was conducted, and failure to germinate until the seeds were scarified. This variety of strategies matches well the variability characteristic of Aldabra's semi-arid, tropical climate. Fifty-five of the sixty-nine species, whose seeds were immersed in sea water for periods of up to 56 days before being planted, showed no effect of this treatment on germination. For thirteen species, final germination levels were reduced and for one, a strand line plant, it was increased.
