Abstract

1. Analysis of total nitrogen from urine and faeces were carried out after feeding the rats with casein, millet and millet plus lysine. Lysine supplementation to millet diet improved the utilization of millet protein. It was observed that the rats on millet diet maintained positive nitrogen balance in spite of its poor effect on their growth. 2. Liver, kidney and muscles of these rats were analysed for total nitrogen and the content of certain amino acids which were deficient in millet. The differences obtained by the different proteins in the total nitrogen and the amino acids in the whole tissues were in accordance with the growth. The results expressed on the basis of l6 per cent nitrogen did not show any significant difference. It was concluded that the dietary deficiency does not alter the amino-acid composition of the tissues.
