Abstract
Resistance was investigated using 2 sets of parents. The first consisted of 13 high-yielding, low-lysine lines (10 best restorers and 3 B-lines) and the second of 9 high-lysine derivatives and donor lines (5 tan and 4 purple pigmented). Two sets of crosses were generated and 4 experiments conducted over 4 environments to determine stability of varietal resistance and reaction to Puccinia purpurea in F1 hybrids in different genetic (plant pigment) and cytoplasmic backgrounds. CSV4 and SPV312 were tan (T), highly resistant parents with stability for resistance over environments. Purple (P) pigmented parents transmitted susceptibility as a dominant character. Incomplete dominance for resistance was seen in some T X T crosses where one parent was highly resistant. T X T hybrids were more resistant than T X P or P X P crosses
