Abstract

In laboratory trials, various cv. of Bermuda grass and star grass (Cynodon spp.) were analysed using a modification of the alkaline picrate method and levels of HCN from 0 to >800 p.p.m. on a fresh wt. basis were found. Considerable variation in HCN levels was found to exist in different parts of the same plant and the stage of growth of the plants also markedly affected HCN levels. Methods of handling and storage of plant material prior to analysis for HCN could significantly affect the results obtained. Results are also given for some Paspalum, Trifolium and Sorghum spp
