Abstract

The tolerance of Pennisetum purpureum X P. americanum, Brachiaria mutica, Panicum maximum, Setaria sphacelata and Cynodon dactylon to excess exchangeable sodium was studied during 1974 in a pot experiment. Levels of excess exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) of 16, 34, 50, 64 and 80 were achieved. A basal dose of fertilizer containing 20 p.p.m. N, 20 p.p.m. P, 15 p.p.m. K and 12.5 p.p.m. ZnSO4 was applied/pot, with a further dose of 20 p.p.m. N applied 6 wk after planting and subsequently after every cut. B. mutica showed 100% survival at all ESP levels whereas C. dactylon showed complete survival at 16 and 34% ESP and 97, 95 and 90% survival at 50, 64 and 80% ESP, resp. Establishment of S. sphacelata and P. purpureum X P. americanum was adversely affected by increasing ESP while P.maximum was highly susceptible. Green forage yields decreased with increasing ESP; yields of B. mutica, C. dactylon, P. purpureum X P. americanum and S. sphacelata were reduced by 45, 50, 86 and 70%, resp., at 80% ESP while P. maximum gave no yield. Increasing ESP decreased CP, Ca, Mg and K contents and increased Na content of the grasses.
