Abstract
As a result of annual surveys beginning in 1977, it was found that in North Carolina Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) caused the greatest losses of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), maize or sorghum when the crops were planted after 1 May. A Field Crop Fall Armyworm Alert system (using indicator fields of maize or Bermuda grass monitored weekly by various methods) has been successful in providing an early warning of impending damage by S. frugiperda, and the organisation of such insect alert systems is described
