Abstract
The essential oil of Sudan grass was isolated by steam distillation of fresh matter and gave a yield of 0.0006%. The oil was further fractionated into functional groups which were analysed by gas chromatographic comparison with authentic samples using polar and nonpolar columns. Nearly all of the 62 compounds identified had been previously detected in the essential oil of hybrid sorghum. However, Sudan grass was rich in carbonyl compounds, while hybrid sorghum was rich in phenols
