Abstract
Two column supports, useful in the resolution of sorghum grain phenolics, are introduced. The 1st, Sepharose CL-6B, divided the phenolics into 3 main groups, F1, F2, and F3, while the 2nd, Sephacryl S-200, subdivided the 3 fractions obtained from the Sepharose column. A continuous automated monitoring system is described for polyphenol detection. The system utilized either Folin-Ciocalteu reagent or a sol. of FeCl3 in Rochelle salt. On addition of alkali, the Folin detection system monitored the total phenolic hydroxyls present, while the FeCl3 method monitored only those hydroxyl phenolics which were spatially acceptable for complexing with the Fe3+. The F3 group phenolics were the largest in size and consisted of 2 polymeric forms, one of mol. wt. approx. 10 000 and the other of mol. wt. > 80000
