Abstract

During observations in 1973-75 on the oviposition of Heliothis zea (Boddie) in maize and sorghum fields in Texas, oviposition by adults of the first full generation of the year generally reached a peak on maize when the greatest number of new silks was present; the preferred oviposition site was the silks themselves, but before silking it was the upper surface of the leaves. On sorghum, the preferred oviposition site was the head, and oviposition by the first-generation females increased as the number of heads increased. Oviposition on either crop did not appear to be synchronised with any particular lunar phase
