Abstract
Laboratory studies were carried out in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India, in 1975-76 on the life-history of Tetrastichus sp., a parasite of larvae and pupae of the sorghum pest Contarinia sorghicola (Coq.). Females laid from 46 to 54 eggs. The egg stage lasted 2-4 days, the 4 larval instars 1-2, 2-3, 2-3 and 2-4 days, respectively, the pupal stage 10-12 days and the life-span of adult males and females 2-3 and 4-5 days. Larvae required an average of 2-3 host larvae for completion of their development. First-instar parasite larvae depended on hosts for their development, whereas those in subsequent instars were able to feed on the ovaries of sorghum spikelets when hosts were not available; this resulted in the ovaries turning brown and subsequently breaking up. The ratio of males to females was 1:1.7 in December and 1:3 in January-February. Brief descriptions of the life stages of the eulophid are given
