Abstract
In studies in India in 1977, aborted spikelets of sorghum heavily infested with diapausing larvae of Contarinia sorghicola (Coq.) were collected at harvest from kharif and rabi crops and stored at room temperature. Groups of the spikelets were continuously exposed to the sun for different periods from 21 April to 1 September at 1-week intervals. Following the first shower, each group was retained for adult emergence. The results showed that exposure of crop refuse containing diapausing larvae throughout the summer would give almost 99% larval mortality provided such exposure occurs in layers not exceeding 15 cm in depth (as diurnal fluctuations in temperature do not penetrate more than 15 cm). Where such a measure is not possible, the residues should be buried deep in a compost pit prior to the rainy season or alternatively not allowed to become wet in the rainy season
