Abstract
Seventeen promising Pennisetum typhoides inbred lines of Indian and exotic derivations were crossed with the male-sterile lines L107A, L103A and L67A. Assessments were made of the percentage pollen fertility and self fertility. Pollen parents which restored fertility in one, two or all three of the male-sterile lines were homozygous for the restorer genes, the partial dominance of fertility restoration in some crosses being attributed to the presence of modifying genes. The pollen parents whose crosses showed segregation for fertility in combination with any of the male-sterile lines were considered to be heterozygous for the respective restorer genes. The inferred genotypic constitution of L107A and L67A was ms1ms1ms2ms2ms3ms3, while that of L103A was Ms1Ms1ms2ms2Ms3Ms3. The results indicated that male-sterile lines with good combining ability could be developed from superior inbred lines which are nonrestorers of fertility in any of the three male-sterile lines
