Abstract

Field tests were carried out in India to determine the effectiveness of 7 systemic insecticides belonging to the carbamate and organophosphorus groups against Atherigona soccata Rond. Seed and soil treatments were applied at 4 locations during the hot and cool seasons of 1971. The types of soil used were loamy sand, light loamy sand, clay loam (black soil) and sandy loam. The effects of the insecticides on emergence of seedlings, number of A. soccata eggs per 10 plants, percentage dead hearts, plant height and number of leaves were recorded. All the compounds except chlorfenvinphos and phorate resulted in a higher rate of plant emergence. The best compound in this respect was a granular preparation containing 10% aldicarb, which may have been due to its nematicidal properties. Seed and soil treatment with 5% carbofuran and soil application of granular preparations of 10% phorate, 5% disulfoton, 10% aldicarb or 10% mephosfolan all resulted in increased height and a greater number of broader leaves as compared with plants grown in untreated soil. All the insecticides except aldicarb resulted in a significantly lower percentage damage by A. soccata in red soil than in black soil. This was most pronounced in the case of carbofuran. Soil treatments were found to be more effective than seed treatment
