Abstract
Field studies were carried out in India in 1973-76 on the estimation of yield and economic losses caused by different levels of infestation of high-yielding sorghum varieties (CSH 1, CSH 5 and Swarna) by Atherigona soccata Rond. The estimated yield loss at an infestation level of 20% ranged from 13 to 20% and that at 90% ranged from 60 to 90%. Calculation of economic losses on the basis of the cost of carbofuran and disulfoton treatments and yield value showed that the potential profit was Rs142.99/ha at a 20% infestation level and Rs992.97/ha at 90%. The data showed that there was a highly favourable cost:benefit ratio, even at low infestation levels
