Abstract

Seeds of Pennisetum typhoides, Sorghum vulgäre, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba and Phaseolus aconitifolius [Vigna aconitifolia] were subjected to water potentials of nil, -500, - 1000 and -1500 joules/kg to determine the effect of low water potential on their germination and a suitable range of water potential for optimum germination. At -1500 joules/kg, germination in the 4 crops was 46.8, 21.2, 2.2 and 9.2%, respectively. Increases in water potential from -1500 joules/kg to nil caused progressive increases in germination of all crops, especially the legumes. It was concluded that optimum germination in P. typhoides and S. vulgare occurs at a water potential of -1000 joules/kg, and in C. tetragonoloba and P. aconitifolius at -500 joules/kg.
