Abstract

The effect of storage on sorghum grains treated with carbofuran at 5 parts a.i. per 100 parts of grain for the control of Atherigona soccata Rond. was studied in Maharashtra, India, in 1976-78. Germination was adversely affected when the grain was stored for over 3 months, and the effectiveness of the insecticide was also reduced by long storage of the treated grain. The flowable form of carbofuran, which was used in 1977, was more effective than dust formulations. Gum arabic used as an adhesive was more effective than castor oil but also reduced germination more. It is concluded that sorghum seeds treated with carbofuran should be sown as soon as possible afterwards
