Abstract

Field studies were carried out in India to screen 450 sorghum derivatives obtained from crosses between high-yielding and resistant varieties to determine their degree of resistance to Atherigona soccata Rond. and Chilo partellus (Swinh.). Some 20 lines were selected as showing desirable resistance to both pests and the results obtained with these 20 are presented in a table. Dead-hearts attributable to damage by A. soccata ranged from 0 to 8.33% and dead-hearts attributable to C. partellus from 0 to 7.14%. The percentage stem tunnelling by the borer ranged from 6.82 to 24.91, but the plant stand was still very good at harvest. A;l lines giving good results had genes contributed by M-35-1 or BP-53.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Tabulated data are presented for 20 lines selected for resistance to Atherigona soccata and Chilo partellus from 450 lines derived from crosses between high-yielding and resistant varieties. Lines with resistance had genes from M35-1 or BP53
