Abstract

Sorghum and maize plants infected with MDMV were more susceptible to infection by H. maydis [Cochliobolus heterostrophus] race T than those not infected by the virus. The fungus produced large, necrotic and often concentric lesions on leaves of MDMV-infected sorghum; lesions on virus-free plants remained small. Lesions induced by C. heterostrophus on leaves of MDMV-infected maize (N and T cytoplasm) were larger and developed more rapidly than on virus-free plants. Sporulation on virus-infected plants began earlier and was more abundant than on virus-free plants. Lesions similar to those resulting from C. heterostrophus developed on MDMV-infected sorghum leaves sprayed with culture filtrate, while only very small necrotic lesions developed on similarly sprayed virus-free plants. The culture filtrate also caused greater water soaking of MDMV-infected maize leaf sections than of virus-free sections. Increased susceptibility to C. heterostrophus race T appeared to be host dependent, since only 5 of 16 hybrids tested showed a positive association between MDMV infection and C. heterostrophus susceptibility.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Five of 16 sorghum hybrids tested, when infected with the virus, were more susceptible to race T of H. maydis (Cochliobolus heterostrophus) than when virus free. Larger lesions produced by the fungus were observed in virus-infected plants of four pairs of maize hybrids, with normal and Texas male-sterile cytoplasm; in a fifth pair, McNair X 210V, this was true only of the form with normal cytoplasm.
