Abstract
The influence of sowing dates and seed rates of kharif crops of the sorghum varieties CSH-1, 604 and Swarna and rabi crops of CSH-1, CSH-4 and R-16 on the incidence of Atherigona soccata Rond. and grain yield under irrigated conditions was determined in field tests at Rahuri, Maharashtra, India, in 1974-75. Pest incidence was significantly lower on crops sown on 20 June (47%) and 5 July (45.95%) in kharif and 26 August (51.47%) in rabi. Pest incidence was higher on crops sown on subsequent dates in both seasons. The varieties 604 and R-16 were the least susceptible to attack, percentage incidence of the pest being 48.93 and 58.77, respectively. Although seed rate had no effect on infestation level, higher yields were obtained with higher seed rates (up to 12 kg/ha). Maximum yields were obtained from crops sown on 20 June (15.95 q/ha) and 5 July (13.25 q/ha) in kharif and 10 September (17.20 q/ha) in rabi.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:The incidence of A. soccata was low on sorghum sown on 20 June and 5 July in the kharif [monsoon] season and on 26 Aug. in the rabi [winter] season; further delay in sowing increased the incidence. Cv. 604 in the kharif season and cv. R-16 in the rabi season were more resistant than other cv. Increasing the sowing rate from 8 to 12 kg/ha increased the grain yields; sowing rates had no effect on A. soccata incidence
