Abstract
In studies in India, a F1 diallel set was evaluated under 3 distinct levels of Atherigona soccata Rond. infestation. The results revealed that variation between and within genotypic groups become more apparent under a high fly population. The additive (D) genetic component was significant for the 2 characters considered in all 3 environments. In general, the magnitude of additive component, as compared to dominance component, increased with increase in fly population. Susceptibility to the fly appears to be recessive under a low insect population but exhibits dominance under a high population. Heritability for dead heart (%) and numbers of eggs per plant increased with increase in infestation. The heritability of resistance to A. soccata appeared to be about 15 to 25% under high to moderate levels of infestation
