Abstract

Like maize, kaffircorn (or grain sorghum as it is commonly known in the U.S.A.) is one of South Afrlca's traditional field crops. It is frequently planted by maize producers as a supplementary crop, since it is more drought-resistant than maize, and hence, should a drought occur, the farmer might still be able to reap a coffircorn crop. There are, however, also certain areas where the soil structure is such that production of kaffircorn is preferred to that of maize
