Abstract

Four newly-developed Ludhiana male sterile lines, L 101A, L 107A, L 110A and L 111A and a U.S. male sterile Tft. 23A were utilized as the seed parents in crosses with 10 newly developed inbreds and combining ability analyses made. Estimates of σ2gca of male sterile lines and the inbreds were higher than corresponding σasca estimates for most of the yield components, except for ear girth and days to 50% earing indicating the importance of additive gene effects for these yield components, whereas grain yield, ear girth and days to 50% earing seemed to have substantial nonadditive gene effects. Male steriles L 111A and L 110A were high combiners for grain yield. Among the inbreds, F 32 F 296 and F 10 were high combiners. The top ranking crosses also ranked high for total ear number, nodal ear number and tillering capacity. The specific combining ability of the crosses, in general, was consistent with the general combining ability of the lines involved.
