Abstract

The loose kernel smut, Sphaceloiheca cruenta (Kühn) Potter, is occasionally found in small quantities in fields of sorghum, Sorghum vulgäre Pers., although it is not widely distributed over the United States. An account of its discovery, its geographic distribution, and the morphologic characters of the causal organism have been adequately discussed (4,6,8,)3. While S, cruenta is much less destructive in America than the fungus causing covered kernel smut of sorghum, Sphaceloiheca sorghi (Link) Clinton, it is of scientific interest because it is known to hybridize with the latter (7, 8)
