Abstract
In trials in 1967, 20 cv. of fodder sugar sorghum were compared with 1 of Sudan grass and 4 of maize. Highest DM yields were given by sugar sorghum cv. SX-12 (19.2 t/ha), Chow Maker (18.5 t/ha), Hybar Mv 301 (15.8 t/ha) and Lindsey 92F (15.8 t/ha). Average yield of sugar sorghum was 14.9 t/ha compared with 15.6 t/ha for Sudan grass cv. Trudan and 11.4 t/ha for maize. In 1968, 22 cv. of sugar sorghum and 2 each of grain sorghum and Sudan grass were compared. Because of abnormally cold weather only 8 sugar sorghums and 1 grain sorghum produced a 2nd cut, whereas both Sudan grasses did so. Siloking (14.7 t/ha) and SX-12 (12.5 t/ha) produced only 1 cut, Hybar Mv 301 (12.5 t/ha), BR-60 (11.6 t/ha) and H-6576 (10.9 t/ha) produced 2. Average yield of sugar sorghum was 9.5 t/ha compared with 9.2-9.4 t/ha for Sudan grass and 3.6-7.0 t/ha for grain sorghum. Data on sugar yields are given.
